Lidl, the popular supermarket chain, is venturing into the mobile phone market to offer cost-effective plans, challenging traditional network providers. To access these deals, customers will need a Lidl Plus account. This move is part of a significant £600 million investment by Lidl, which includes plans to launch 50 new stores nationwide.
Following in the footsteps of other unconventional competitors like Revolut and Klarna, Lidl aims to introduce budget-friendly phone services in the UK, US, France, and Spain. By partnering with 1GLOBAL communications provider, Lidl will operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), utilizing existing infrastructure to offer mobile plans.
Aside from its telecom expansion, Lidl is also expanding its physical presence by opening over 50 new stores in locations such as Abbots Langley, Warrington, and Thornbury. This expansion, part of a £600 million investment initiative, is expected to create 2,000 jobs and contribute to local economies.
Schwarz Group, Lidl’s parent company, is set to acquire a 9.9% stake in 1GLOBAL as part of the agreement, aligning with its broader digital strategy. Schwarz Group has been actively investing in tech ventures, including cloud computing, cybersecurity, and AI startups, signaling its commitment to digital innovation.
The expansion into additional markets by Lidl could pose a challenge to established telecom providers, as new players enter the market offering competitive pricing and convenience. Employment minister Kate Dearden praised the move, emphasizing the positive impact on job creation and community development.
