A man who was convicted of raping a female doctor in a late-night street assault shocked onlookers by engaging in lewd behavior during his initial court appearance. Mihai Nicolae Patran, aged 34, assaulted the 27-year-old victim in Glasgow city center on November 26, 2023, before she managed to escape to safety in a nearby taxi. Patran, subsequently apprehended, has now been found guilty of the crimes and is expected to receive a substantial prison sentence. During the court proceedings, a female prison officer was disturbed to witness Patran behaving inappropriately while in custody.
The victim, who recounted her harrowing experience at Glasgow High Court, revealed that she had recently relocated to the city for work and had been out at a house party that fateful night. After a series of events led her to be alone in the city center, she found herself in a distressing encounter with Patran, who subjected her to a terrifying assault. Despite her pleas to stop, the victim described feeling helpless and scared during the traumatic incident. She eventually managed to break free from her attacker and seek refuge by ordering an Uber to take her home.
Following an investigation into the assault, Patran, who claimed the encounter was consensual, was arrested and brought to trial. Additional disturbing behaviors by Patran, including indecent exposure to another woman on a train, came to light during the legal proceedings. Despite his defense, Patran was found guilty on all charges and has been added to the sex offenders register. He is currently in custody awaiting sentencing next month. The presiding sheriff was made aware of Patran’s inappropriate conduct during the court appearance, leading to police involvement in the matter.
