Rory McIlroy has endorsed a new award presented by the DP World Tour to honor the top player in the Majors annually, excluding the Masters champion.
After becoming the first European to achieve the Grand Slam by winning at Augusta in April, McIlroy’s award was revealed just before the DP World Tour Championships. Named the Rory McIlroy Award, it recognizes the tour member who excels in all four Major Championships throughout the season.
Despite his achievements, McIlroy is ineligible to win the award himself. He expressed his approval, stating that the decision was a collective one to exclude him from consideration.
McIlroy joins a select group of players with awards named after them on the DP World Tour, acknowledging his performance on the course and his continuous backing of the tour, including participating in events in India and Australia.
Reflecting on the honor, McIlroy noted the significance of having an award named after him and looks forward to presenting it to the deserving recipient in the future.
As the sixth golfer to complete the career Grand Slam, McIlroy shared that the idea for the award was proposed by DP World Tour’s CEO shortly after his Masters victory.
Looking ahead, McIlroy aims to defend his title at the DP World Tour Championships to secure his fourth consecutive Race to Dubai win, surpassing his current record shared with Ballesteros. He praised the sustained excellence required to achieve such a feat over multiple years.
McIlroy’s strong performance this year positions him well for continued success, with a tied third finish in Abu Dhabi setting the stage for a competitive weekend.
