In a recent TV interview, prominent Conservative figure Chris Philp stumbled six times when asked to name the leader of the Welsh branch of his party. The Shadow Home Secretary appeared uneasy as he repeatedly avoided the question before admitting he could not recall the leader’s name, citing the leader as “relatively new.”
The interviewer, Chris Hope of GB News, pointed out that the Welsh Conservative leader is Darren Millar and expressed concerns about the party’s diminishing presence in Wales. Hope criticized Philp for seemingly focusing solely on English territories and suggested that Wales may be slipping away from Conservative influence as the upcoming elections could be challenging for the party.
Philp defended his party’s commitment to governing the entire country, emphasizing various national initiatives discussed at the party conference, such as welfare savings, stamp duty cuts, immigration control, and increased police recruitment.
Darren Millar took over as the leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the Senedd following Andrew RT Davies’ resignation last December amid internal party criticisms. The Welsh Tories faced a setback in a recent by-election in Caerphilly, securing only 2% of the vote and trailing behind Plaid Cymru, Reform, and Labour.
The conversation also touched on Philp’s shifting stance regarding Reform MP Sarah Pochin’s controversial remarks about racial diversity in advertisements. Initially cautious in labeling the comments as racist, Philp later condemned Pochin’s statements as racist and emphasized the importance of her apology.
These developments come amid growing scrutiny of the Conservative party’s strategies and positions in both Wales and broader national issues.
