A woman facing trial for allegedly stalking Madeleine McCann’s family claimed to be the missing girl and insisted on proving her identity, regardless of their assistance, according to court testimonies.
The Leicester Crown Court was presented with a recording of the defendant, Wandelt, 24, from Lubin in south-west Poland, contacting Gerry McCann and leaving a voicemail asserting her belief of being Madeleine and her determination to uncover her true identity.
Wandelt is accused of persistent harassment through letters, calls, voicemails, WhatsApp messages to Kate and Gerry McCann, and Instagram messages to Madeleine’s siblings, Amelie and Sean, over a span of two and a half years. Allegations include multiple contacts in a single day and even visiting the family home in Leicestershire.
Detective Mark Draycott, a part of Scotland Yard’s Operation Grange investigating Madeleine McCann’s case, testified that Wandelt had reached out in June 2022. He informed her that there was no evidence supporting her claim of being Madeleine, despite her persistence.
On the other hand, Karen Spragg, 61, of Caerau, Cardiff, is facing a charge of stalking causing serious alarm or distress, with her alleged offenses occurring between June 2022 and February 2025. During the trial, she became emotional upon hearing the voicemails left by Wandelt to Kate.
