EE mobile users are being cautioned about a resurgence of a scam text message. Cybersecurity experts at Bitdefender have reported that some EE customers are receiving urgent messages threatening the loss of EE reward points unless immediate action is taken.
Bitdefender advised users to be wary of messages claiming that a large number of EE reward points will expire soon, labeling them as likely scams. These cybercriminals are pretending to be affiliated with EE to trick individuals into clicking on malicious links that redirect to fraudulent websites aimed at stealing login credentials for financial gain.
The success of this scam hinges on creating a sense of urgency, with scammers hoping users will act impulsively without questioning. Bitdefender highlighted the tactic of setting tight deadlines to pressure recipients, emphasizing that legitimate EE alerts will only appear within official accounts, not through unsolicited texts.
Users were reminded to be cautious of unsolicited texts with countdowns or urgent demands for action, and to forward any suspicious messages to 7726 before deleting them. Similar scams targeting EE customers have been encountered before, with reports of convincing fake messages about reward points circulating earlier this year.
EE reiterated that they do not have a points program and shared examples of scam messages, such as ones offering free points that will expire soon. The company’s latest advice includes avoiding clicking on unknown links in text messages, refraining from replying to suspicious messages, and never sharing personal or financial information.
EE users are urged to exercise caution and follow the recommended safety measures to protect themselves from falling victim to such scams.
