“Study: Older Women Benefit from 4,000 Steps Weekly”

A recent study suggests that older women can reduce their risk of early death by 26% if they manage to achieve 4,000 steps in a day just once or twice a week. Experts emphasize that the total number of steps taken, rather than the frequency of walking days, is crucial in lowering mortality rates and the likelihood of heart disease.

The common belief that individuals must reach 10,000 steps daily is challenged by the study, indicating that there is no singular “best” approach to physical activity. Researchers advocate for any preferred pattern of movement, emphasizing the importance of staying active.

The research, involving 13,547 women without prior heart disease or cancer, revealed significant health benefits for those who reached 4,000 steps on one or two days per week. This group experienced a 26% lower risk of all-cause mortality and a 27% reduced risk of heart disease. Increasing this activity level to three days a week resulted in even greater benefits, with a 40% lower risk of early death and a 27% lower risk of heart disease.

Further analysis showed that engaging in 5,000 to 7,000 steps daily led to additional health improvements, although the benefits were more moderate. This range was associated with a 32% lower risk of death but showed a plateau in the risk of cardiovascular disease-related death at 16%.

The researchers from Harvard University stressed the importance of daily step count over weekly frequency in reducing the risk of premature death and heart disease among older women. They recommended a minimum of 4,000 steps per day on one to two days a week to enhance longevity and cardiovascular health.

The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, tracked participants over nearly 11 years, during which 1,765 women (13%) passed away, and 781 (5.1%) developed heart disease. The findings support the notion that a higher step count, regardless of daily distribution, is linked to superior health outcomes.
