As the current academic year progresses, numerous students are engaging in a groundbreaking educational experience that is revolutionizing their learning, dietary habits, and overall growth.
Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools is an unprecedented program that supplies millions of portions of nutritious food to schools with a high proportion of students receiving free meals, aiming to enhance children’s well-being and academic performance.
Among the beneficiary institutions is Ark Putney Academy in southwest London, which recently enjoyed a special visit from actor and comedian Babatunde Aléshé. Babatunde conducted a lively session on the importance of consuming five portions of fruits and vegetables daily, delighting the students with a variety of fresh produce.
The Fruit & Veg for Schools initiative was introduced in 2024, providing 10.8 million portions of healthy food to 411 schools in its inaugural year. This year, the program has expanded to over 500 schools, ensuring that each student receives a daily serving of fruits and vegetables.
Feedback from teachers involved in the previous year’s program indicated a significant improvement in classroom behavior, focus, and energy levels among students. The positive impact of Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools on the lives of young individuals is evident, with all teachers agreeing that the initiative has made a beneficial difference.
Babatunde emphasized the filling and energizing properties of fruits and vegetables, drawing from his childhood experiences with healthy eating. He highlighted the potential of the program to educate children about the nutritional benefits of various fruits and vegetables, encouraging them to make healthier choices.
The assortment of items provided includes bananas, blueberries, avocados, and spinach, which can be integrated into breakfast clubs or utilized to establish healthy snack options for students. The program aligns with Tesco Stronger Starts, which supports schools and community groups by funding essential food and activity resources to improve children’s well-being.
Babatunde expressed confidence in the long-lasting impact of Fruit & Veg for Schools, emphasizing the dual role of educating and nourishing children. By teaching students about the health benefits of different fruits and vegetables, the program aims to foster mindful eating habits and empower children to make nutritious choices.
Beyond physical health, the program has also had a positive emotional impact, such as appointing students as “fruit monitors” to boost their confidence and sense of purpose. Tesco UK CEO Ashwin Prasad highlighted the overwhelmingly positive feedback from schools and emphasized the program’s expansion to reach more young individuals in underprivileged communities.
With an increasing number of schools and students participating in the initiative, Tesco’s Fruit & Veg for Schools is not just providing sustenance but sowing the seeds for a healthier future.
