“EPI Urges Nationwide Auto-Enrolment for Free School Meals”

Must Read

A recent report highlights the importance of automatically enrolling children eligible for free school meals to ensure they receive necessary support and prevent any hungry kids from being left out. The Education Policy Institute (EPI) is urging a comprehensive review of the system to guarantee that the Government’s initiative to expand free hot lunches is effectively executed.

The EPI proposes establishing a centralized auto-enrolment system for free school meals (FSM) nationwide to minimize the number of eligible children missing out on essential meals and associated assistance. It emphasizes the need for sufficient resources for FSM in early years and recommends removing eligibility criteria barriers for preschool children.

Furthermore, the EPI suggests simplifying the registration process for children from families without access to public funds to address concerns that applying for FSM could impact their immigration status. The plan to extend free school meals to all children in families receiving Universal Credit in England, revealed by Keir Starmer, is expected to make half a million more children eligible for free meals by September 2026.

A campaign by the Mirror advocates for free school meals for all primary school children. School leaders’ union NAHT’s general secretary, Paul Whiteman, emphasizes the importance of free meals for disadvantaged families and unlocking pupil premium funding for schools. Liberal Democrat schools spokeswoman Caroline Voaden supports the need to streamline the system to ensure families in need receive the necessary support without bureaucratic hurdles.

Dr. Tammy Campbell from the EPI stresses the importance of targeting funding towards the most vulnerable children. Ruth Maisey from the Nuffield Foundation, which funded the EPI report, highlights the limitations of solely focusing on families eligible for free school meals and calls for a more comprehensive approach to addressing disadvantage.

The Department for Education affirms its commitment to tackling child poverty by offering free school meals to all children from households claiming Universal Credit. They mention plans to enhance the eligibility checking service to simplify the process for families and express readiness to collaborate with the education sector in reviewing broader funding for disadvantaged students.
