A tragic incident unfolded at the Grand Canyon as a 65-year-old man lost his life after accidentally falling from Guano Point on the western rim of the canyon. The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office reported that the victim plummeted approximately 130 feet on the Hualapai Reservation.
In response to the emergency, the sheriff’s office collaborated with Hualapai Nation technicians who employed ropes to establish a pulley system. This system was utilized to lower into the canyon and retrieve the man’s body on Thursday afternoon.
According to the sheriff’s office, the man was found about 130 feet down on a scree pile, prompting technical rope technicians to set up a mechanism for lowering and raising using ropes. The recovered body was then transported to the Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office for further investigation.
Assistance in the recovery operation was provided by the Hualapai Tribal Police Department, Hualapai Nation Fire, and Grand Canyon West Security. The sheriff’s office expressed condolences to the man’s family and urged the public to respect their privacy during this difficult time.
The identity of the deceased individual has not been disclosed, and his body was transferred to the Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office. This unfortunate incident follows another tragedy in September when a 27-year-old man, Steven Bradley of Federal Heights, Colorado, lost his life at the Grand Canyon National Park after his vehicle went over a rim near the South Kaibab Trailhead, leading to a fall of approximately 300 feet below the rim.
