A woman working at a daycare has been taken into custody and formally accused of causing harm to a three-month-old baby, as per authorities. The suspect, identified as Ashley Karschnick, 32, allegedly lost her temper when the infant cried each time she handled her, resulting in her forcefully slamming the baby against a crib, resulting in a broken arm.
Karschnick has been indicted with a felony charge of child abuse for recklessly causing injury in relation to the incident, purportedly occurring at Lily Pad Day Care in Fond du Lac. Law enforcement officers were alerted after the baby girl was hospitalized with a fractured arm, based on a criminal complaint obtained from local news source WBAY.
According to medical documentation from Children’s Wisconsin, the baby sustained a “minimal displaced spiral fracture of the mid left humeral diaphysis,” a condition the doctor stated was indicative of physical abuse towards a child.
A thorough investigation was conducted by the police, involving various interviews and a detailed analysis of surveillance footage. Reports indicate that Karschnick was present in the baby room at the daycare when the alleged abuse transpired. Investigators noted a visible escalation of frustration on the defendant’s part throughout the day, as observed in the surveillance recordings.
The specific incident that led to the baby’s injury reportedly occurred around 12:30 p.m., according to details from Express.com. The video footage supposedly shows Karschnick lifting the baby and forcefully dropping her into the crib, causing the crib to visibly shake and emit a thudding sound upon impact with the mattress.
Approximately 10 minutes later, the footage allegedly reveals Karschnick returning to the crib and attempting to comfort the baby, albeit unsuccessfully, as the infant’s cries persisted intensely.
The affidavit states that at this juncture, the baby’s arm exhibited signs of malfunction. Despite the video evidence, Karschnick refuted the accusations, attributing the crib’s movement to accidental contact. When questioned about the baby’s distressing cries, she reportedly claimed they were in response to her touch triggering the crying.
Karschnick is presently detained and has posted a bail amount of $2,500 (£1,916). During a court hearing on 28 October, her legal counsel sought permission for her to access public places where children frequent, like supermarkets. The judge opted to maintain the existing bond conditions, as reported by Wbay.
