A tragic incident occurred in northeastern Brazil when a passenger bus collided with a sand embankment and overturned, resulting in the deaths of at least 17 individuals, as confirmed by authorities. The bus, carrying approximately 30 passengers, met with the accident on Saturday, October 18. The exact number of injured individuals, who were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals, remains uncertain.
The bus, identified as a “tourist bus” by Police Chief Luciano Holanda, was en route to Brumado city when the crash transpired in Saloá, located in the state of Pernambuco. According to police reports, the driver lost control of the vehicle, veered into the opposite lane, struck rocks along the roadside, and subsequently collided with a sand embankment, causing the bus to overturn. Several passengers were ejected from the bus during the rollover due to not wearing seat belts.
The bus had been returning from Brumado in Bahia to Santa Cruz do Capibaribe in Pernambuco’s Agreste region. Governor Jernimo Teixeira of Bahia expressed his administration’s commitment to aiding in rescue operations and victim identification, emphasizing his deep sorrow for the lives lost and the suffering of affected families.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with the driver sustaining minor injuries and testing negative for alcohol consumption, as per law enforcement. Notably, more than 10,000 fatalities were reported in traffic accidents in Brazil in 2024, according to the Ministry of Transportation.
