Kelsey Mitchell showcased her scoring prowess with a game-high 29 points, leading the Indiana Fever to a hard-fought 101-95 victory over the Toronto Tempo in an intense matchup on Tuesday. The standout Caitlin Clark contributed significantly with 24 points and seven assists, propelling Indiana to their fifth consecutive win. The atmosphere at Scotiabank Arena was electric with numerous fans donning Clark’s jerseys.
Brittney Sykes made a remarkable return to the Tempo lineup after a two-month absence due to injury, recording 15 points, five assists, and two rebounds. Despite Sykes’ efforts, Toronto, led by all-star Marina Mabrey’s 22 points, suffered their eleventh consecutive defeat. Aneesah Morrow, coming off the bench, set a new franchise record with a double-double of 14 points and 16 rebounds.
Sykes had been sidelined with a left plantar fascia injury sustained back in June against the Fever, during which Toronto endured a ten-game losing streak. The Tempo, once in contention for a playoff spot, now hold the third-worst record in the WNBA, trailing behind the Connecticut Sun and Seattle Storm, who have already been eliminated from postseason contention.
In terms of takeaways from the game, the Fever, known for their high-scoring offense, lived up to their reputation by scoring 96.2 points per game, excelling in both three-point shooting (11 for 25) and points in the paint (50). Despite never leading and facing a 17-point deficit, Toronto showcased resilience with 22 second-chance points, outrebounding Indiana 41-32, and receiving strong contributions from their bench, which scored 38 points compared to Indiana’s 20.
A crucial moment in the game came when Mabrey sank a three-pointer in the final seconds, bringing Toronto within four points, but the shot was nullified by referees for a palming violation. The Tempo struggled offensively, shooting 39.1% from the field and 32.4% from beyond the arc on 87 and 37 attempts, respectively.
Looking ahead, the Fever will travel to face the Dallas Wings on Thursday, while the Tempo are set to take on the Washington Mystics on Wednesday.
