Madonna, the queen of pop, is set to reclaim her throne at the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards. Surpassing Taylor Swift, Madonna has secured the most nominations for this year’s VMAs, marking her third time as the most nominated artist at the event.
With a total of 11 nominations for the ceremony next month, Madonna’s recognition includes nods for artist of the year and video of the year, attributed to her highly successful album “Confessions II” and its corresponding film.
In a fierce competition, Madonna outshined Taylor Swift, who holds the record for the most solo artist wins in VMA history. Swift garnered nine nominations for her album “The Life of a Showgirl” and the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia.” Following closely behind Swift are Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande, each receiving seven nominations.
Madonna’s dominance in the VMA nominations is not new, as she previously led in 1990 and 1998 with her “Vogue” and “Ray of Light” eras. Her memorable performance at the inaugural 1984 ceremony, clad in a wedding dress and “Boy Toy” belt buckle while singing “Like a Virgin,” remains iconic, pushing the limits of cable television standards.
Among Madonna’s nominations are video of the year, artist of the year, and song and collaboration of the year for “Bring Your Love,” a track featuring fellow nominee Carpenter. The coveted video of the year category sees Madonna’s “Confessions” competing against Swift’s “Ophelia,” Grande’s “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” Carpenter’s “Tears,” Bruno Mars’s “I Just Might,” and Gener8ion and Yung Lean’s “Storm.”
For the upcoming event on Sept. 27, where the winners will be unveiled, public voting is available for 13 categories. The ceremony will be broadcast live on CBS, MTV, and streamed on Paramount+, promising an exciting showdown for the music industry’s top accolades.
