Trump Denies Interfering in French-Canadian Affairs

Must Read

Just ahead of Quebec’s upcoming provincial election, U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed allegations of him interfering with French-speaking Canadians as baseless, labeling it a “senseless claim” on his Truth Social account early Tuesday.

The dispute arose from issues that led to the breakdown of trade talks between the U.S. and Canada last week, as Prime Minister Mark Carney pointed out that certain U.S. demands could have jeopardized the French language. These demands included cuts to subsidies for French-language media and the need for bilingual product labeling.

During a press conference in Lévis, Que., Carney clarified that American negotiators found the discoverability of French-Canadian content on streaming platforms to be a contentious point. He highlighted the ease of finding such content due to Quebec’s existing legislation that promotes it.

Trump refuted the claims in his social media post, asserting that he has never considered meddling in French-speaking Canadians’ affairs and accusing the Prime Minister of fabricating the story for political gain.

In response to Trump’s remarks, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly emphasized the importance of sovereignty and national values over mere expressions of affection for French Canadians.

Last year, Quebec passed Bill 109 to uphold the cultural sovereignty of Quebec and ensure the visibility of French-language content in the digital realm. The legislation, effective since December 2025, mandates streaming services to feature and facilitate access to French content.

Additionally, Quebec’s stringent regulations mandate product packaging labels to be in French, with some exceptions. The U.S. government flagged this provision, embedded in Bill 96, as a trade concern in early 2025.
