At least 62 individuals have lost their lives due to continuous heavy rainfall and flooding in Uttar Pradesh, a state in northern India, as reported by officials on Monday. The state government revealed that 46 individuals sustained injuries, and over 1,000 houses were impacted following three days of intense rainfall leading to flooding across multiple districts.
In response to the situation, schools in various parts of the state, including the capital city of Lucknow, remained closed on Monday. Rescue operations were actively conducted to relocate individuals from inundated areas to safer places. Residents were urged to refrain from unnecessary travel in waterlogged zones and to steer clear of swiftly flowing rivers, streams, and drains.
The forecast indicated a reduction in rainfall starting Monday, with Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow, mentioning that a weather system weakening over the Bay of Bengal would bring relief. However, light showers could persist in the eastern and western regions of the state until Tuesday.
Besides Uttar Pradesh, flooding also impacted Odisha in the eastern part of India, prompting the evacuation of over 75,000 people to secure locations, according to officials. Meanwhile, in Nepal, 21 individuals lost their lives in weather-related incidents between Thursday and Sunday, with five individuals still missing and five others sustaining injuries. Moreover, floods and landslides caused damage to 194 houses.
Nepal continues to grapple with recovery efforts following severe floods in August that claimed the lives of more than 1,400 individuals and left almost 6,000 missing.
