A recent study conducted by scientists confirmed the disappearance of Canada’s last remaining epishelf lake, which consisted of freshwater floating on saltwater and supported a unique ecosystem. Jérémie Bonneau, the lead author and an assistant professor at Laval University in Quebec City, expressed sorrow over the loss of the Milne Fiord epishelf lake on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, emphasizing its significance as the only one of its kind in Canada.
The vanishing of this once common phenomenon illustrates the impact of a warming climate on the Arctic region. The detailed account of the lake’s demise can be found in a recent study published in the journal Scientific Reports, marking the end of a 4000-year era.
Epishelf lakes form when freshwater accumulates on top of saltwater due to the damming effect of ice shelves, such as the Milne Ice Shelf in this case. These lakes create a unique ecosystem where freshwater and saltwater communities coexist separately in close proximity, fostering a diverse range of organisms.
The sudden collapse of the Milne Ice Shelf in 2020 led to the release of the epishelf lake, causing the freshwater to drain rapidly into the ocean. Consequently, the unique ecosystem within the lake perished, as freshwater organisms could not survive in the saltwater environment.
While epishelf lakes are now absent in Canada, a few still exist in Greenland and Antarctica. However, researchers fear that these ecosystems are also at risk due to the ongoing impact of climate change.
