Promising Canadian striker Promise David is set to make his mark in the Premier League after Brighton & Hove Albion confirmed his signing on a season-long loan from Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium. The agreement includes an obligation to purchase David for a reported fee of $29.7 million US, contingent upon meeting certain undisclosed criteria.
Union Saint-Gilloise announced that David will be making his debut in the Premier League starting from the upcoming season, marking a record fee for the Belgian club. David’s move to Brighton comes after a successful stint at Union, where he netted 41 goals in 82 matches and contributed to the club’s first league title win in 90 years in 2025. He extended his contract with Union through June 2029 last year.
The 25-year-old striker, who hails from Brampton, Ontario, represented Canada at the recent World Cup, scoring a goal despite limited playing time due to a hip injury. With four goals in 14 appearances for the senior national team, David initially debuted for Nigeria’s under-23 side in October 2022 but later switched allegiance to Canada in February 2025, following approval from FIFA after discussions with Canada coach Jesse Marsch.
Brighton’s signing of David adds another chapter to his diverse career, having played professionally in Croatia, Malta, and Estonia before his move to Belgium in July 2024. Brighton’s Sporting Director, Mike Cave, expressed excitement about David’s potential, highlighting his goal-scoring prowess, physical attributes, international experience, and European competition background as valuable assets for the upcoming season.
As Brighton prepares for the new season, the club, which has maintained its top-flight status in England for nine consecutive seasons, aims to build on its eighth-place finish in the previous Premier League campaign.
