Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Czech player Barbora Krejcikova have progressed to the next stage at the Cincinnati Open. They secured a victory against the fourth-seeded duo of Spain’s Cristina Bucsa and American Nicole Melichar-Martinez with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 in the Round of 32 of the women’s doubles competition on Monday. The match lasted one hour and 33 minutes.
This tournament marks the first time that Dabrowski and Krejcikova have teamed up on the court. Their next opponents in the Round of 16, scheduled for Tuesday, will be the unseeded Czech pair of Linda Noskova and Marie Bouzkova.
In a separate match, Leylah Fernandez from Laval, Quebec, and her partner Sara Errani of Italy took one hour and 29 minutes to defeat Tamara Korpatsch from Germany and British player Emily Webley-Smith with a score of 6-2, 7-6 (2) on Monday evening.
Although Fernandez and Errani clinched the first set in just 31 minutes, Korpatsch and Webley-Smith staged a strong comeback in the second set. Despite leading 6-5 and serving for the victory, their opponents couldn’t seal the deal. Fernandez and Errani ended the match with two aces, 23 winners, one double fault, and only nine unforced errors out of the total 34. Their upcoming match in the Round of 16 will be against Chan Hao-ching from Taiwan and Maya Joint from Australia.
Earlier, Fernandez was defeated by Xiyu Wang of China in the women’s singles event on Sunday.
