Grant Zazula, a Yukon paleontologist, vividly recalls the moment he received the unexpected news that the “cougars” were, in fact, cheetahs. Cassatt-Johnstone’s groundbreaking identification of the Yukon Miracinonyx, also known as the extinct American cheetah, paved the way for a new study published in Current Biology. The research sheds light on the ice-age cat’s diet and habitat range, unraveling a compelling detective story.

Scientists had long believed that the American cheetah, resembling modern-day cheetahs in physique, evolved to hunt pronghorns in grassy plains. However, finding these creatures in the Arctic tundra posed a perplexing challenge for paleontologists. Beringia, the region where Asia and North America once connected, presented a unique environment that raised questions about how Miracinonyx survived there.

To address this mystery, researchers employed stable isotope analysis, a technique used in forensics to examine ancient diets and environmental conditions. The study revealed that Yukon cheetahs primarily fed on fish, a behavior uncommon among past and present feline species, suggesting a complex ecosystem puzzle.

The study’s findings astonished paleontologists like Julie Meachen, who noted the distinct behavior of Yukon cheetahs compared to their counterparts in midcontinental North America. In a region teeming with formidable predators, the abundance of Yukon salmon likely provided an easy food source for the cheetahs.

Genetic analysis further revealed that Miracinonyx was more closely related to North American pumas than African cheetahs. The study also highlighted the low genetic diversity and small population numbers of these cats, factors that may have contributed to their extinction.

Grant Zazula proposed renaming this unique northern population from ‘American Cheetah’ to ‘Yukon Cheetah,’ emphasizing the importance of ongoing discoveries in paleontology. Each new bone unearthed in the Yukon has the potential to unveil a previously unknown chapter in the region’s ancient history.
