The individual in question, Biwei Zhang, previously interned at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium. While Belgian officials did not disclose her identity, a CBC News investigation identified her as Zhang, a systems engineer with an economics background. Zhang’s resume indicates previous employment at the Canadian Space Agency and Statistics Canada.
Reports from security sources in Europe, including Reuters, suggest that Zhang displayed suspicious behavior that attracted the attention of NATO’s internal security services. Allegations include excessive curiosity about colleagues, unauthorized access to restricted areas, and viewing files beyond her IT Department responsibilities at SHAPE.
Zhang is currently in custody in Belgium, with unproven allegations against her. The public safety committee, as announced by Caputo, aims to scrutinize Zhang’s internship acquisition process at NATO, the extent of security screening performed prior to her access, any concerns raised by Canadian or allied entities, and the adequacy of monitoring procedures.
Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree has pledged a thorough investigation into Canada’s security screening protocols to address public concerns and prevent similar incidents in the future. Prime Minister Mark Carney indicated that Canadian security officials were not caught off guard by the arrest, emphasizing the need for accountability and prevention moving forward.
