“Canada Searches for Eurovision Star”

Must Read

Canada is gearing up for its first appearance at the Eurovision Song Contest, with high hopes of making a memorable debut. The country faces a crucial decision in selecting its representative: whether to showcase powerful vocals and emotional ballads akin to Céline Dion’s 1988 success or embrace the quirky and unconventional style that Eurovision is known for, mirroring Greece’s recent performance by Akylas, who sported a big orange cat costume.

The search for Canada’s Eurovision contender is underway, as performers can now apply through the CBC/Radio-Canada portal. While the entry is open to all, the organizers are seeking individuals with a strong track record in the music industry. Several artists have already expressed interest, including Rêve, a Juno Award winner for Dance Recording of the Year, Talk, who won the Juno for breakthrough artist of the year, and bbno$, a two-time Fan Choice Juno winner.

Prospective contestants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, above 18 years old by May 1, 2027, and capable of international travel and passing standard background checks. In addition to these requirements, applicants must submit two videos: a live performance and a statement expressing their passion for Eurovision. Strong vocal abilities and proficiency in both English and French are essential for aspiring singers.

The selection process is moving swiftly, with the application deadline set for September 9. CBC/Radio-Canada aims to assemble a shortlist of finalists with the help of music and television experts, along with industry professionals. While established artists are likely to dominate the initial selection, emerging talents are encouraged to participate for future opportunities.

Following an online public vote and a jury decision, one artist will be chosen to represent Canada at Eurovision. The selected performer will play a pivotal role in shaping the final song, with support from established songwriters. The intense preparation period leading up to the Eurovision Grand Final in May includes songwriting, music video production, and performance rehearsals.

The selected artist will receive compensation for their efforts, with the potential for significant exposure on a global scale. The Eurovision Song Contest offers a platform for unparalleled visibility, likened to the reach of the Super Bowl halftime show.
