Markham is gearing up for a thrilling weekend as it hosts the NTT IndyCar Series, along with other motorsports events, for the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy. While IndyCar has a history in Toronto since 1986, this will be the first time the race is held outside the city, featuring a brand-new track layout.
The 3.52-kilometre, 12-turn course will traverse the Unionville GO station grounds, the York University Markham Campus, and the Markham Pan Am Centre. To facilitate access to the track, attendees are encouraged to utilize GO Transit, York Region Transit, or drive via Highway 407 with parking available west of the event site.
Metrolinx is enhancing Stouffville Line services to accommodate racegoers, introducing additional trips to and from Unionville GO. York Region Transit will operate more frequent services, and Markham offers shuttle services between designated parking lots and the event venue.
Markham residents have been coping with construction impacts in preparation for the event, including limited parking at Unionville GO, road resurfacing, and the installation of grandstands and barriers. Road closures affecting parts of Enterprise Boulevard, Kennedy Road, YMCA Boulevard, University Boulevard, and South Unionville Boulevard will persist until Monday at 6 a.m., with some restrictions extending until August 27 for track dismantling.
The main event, the IndyCar race, is set for Sunday with Spaniard Alex Palou leading the championship standings and expected to be a strong contender. Other drivers to watch include Pato O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, and Rinus Veekay. Local talent like Anthony Martella and Chase Pelletier will also feature in supporting races.
The unique Markham track layout presents a new challenge for drivers, with freshly paved roads and unfamiliar elevation changes. Tickets for the weekend races are available for purchase on the event website, with Friday’s practice and qualifying sessions open to the public for free as part of Fan Friday, encouraging donations to Make-A-Wish Canada.
