Sokvin Vann found herself stuck in a routine almost four years ago. Encouraged by her brother, she turned to her passion for K-pop and BTS, a popular South Korean boy band, to create BTS Army Toronto. Despite facing personal tragedy with her brother’s passing, Vann, now 43 years old, expanded the fan club into a vibrant community that hosts numerous events, contests, and charity initiatives, while also promoting local Korean businesses.
With BTS set to return to Toronto after more than a decade, BTS Army Toronto, co-led by Vann and her 24-year-old son, Jordan, alongside a team of ten, is preparing for their arrival. Vann expressed how the community has not only strengthened bonds but also brought unexpected friendships founded on a shared love for music.
As part of their Arirang World Tour, BTS is scheduled to perform sold-out shows at Rogers Stadium over the weekend, expecting to entertain around 100,000 fans. In anticipation of the concerts, the City of Toronto announced the temporary renaming of Yonge Street to BTS Boulevard, adorned in red to commemorate the occasion.
The city also declared Saturday and Sunday as BTS Weekend in Toronto, symbolized by lighting up the Toronto sign in purple, a color synonymous with BTS and their fans. BTS enthusiasts, known for their deep devotion to the group, appreciate the band’s meaningful music that touches on themes such as mental health, self-love, and personal growth.
The outdoor venue in north Toronto marks the only Canadian stop on BTS’s global tour spanning 88 shows in 34 cities across 23 countries until March 2027. Since their debut in 2013, BTS has evolved from underdogs to global sensations, with significant achievements like their chart-topping English track “Dynamite” in 2020.
For Vann, witnessing BTS in her hometown holds special significance, especially after the cancellation of their 2020 Toronto concerts due to the pandemic. BTS Army Toronto will be active at the Toronto Korean Festival, offering guidance and hosting pre-concert events for fans to connect and enjoy the experience together.
