The Canadian Elite Basketball League has reverted to a single-game championship format following the cancellation of the best-of-three final between the Winnipeg Sea Bears and Brampton Honey Badgers due to unsafe playing conditions caused by court condensation. The decision was swiftly made on Wednesday evening, with the championship game now scheduled to take place in Winnipeg on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET. This change marks a return to the previous championship format used in the league from 2019 to 2025.
Brampton initially took a 6-0 lead in the halted final game, but play was stopped when Sea Bears’ player Xavier Moon slipped on the court. The league emphasized that the safety of players, officials, and fans is their top priority, leading to the game’s cancellation and the transition to a single-game championship to determine the season’s champion.
Honey Badgers CEO Al Whitley expressed regret over the cancellation, with Brampton having won the two previous encounters against Winnipeg earlier in the season. The Sea Bears, led by standout players Xavier Moon and Simon Hildebrandt, have had an impressive playoff run, defeating strong opponents like the Saskatoon Mamba and the top-seeded Vancouver Bandits to secure their spot in the championship series.
The Honey Badgers, who previously won a CEBL title in 2022, have also showcased their strength by overcoming tough competition to reach the finals. The final game will not only determine the league champion but also feature an intriguing off-court storyline, as the Sea Bears and Honey Badgers are owned by siblings David Asper and Leonard Asper, respectively.
The matchup promises to be an exciting conclusion to the season, highlighting the competitive spirit and talent within the Canadian Elite Basketball League.
