“Canadian Director Matt Johnson Unveils Bourdain Biopic ‘Tony'”

Must Read

Canadian director Matt Johnson, just days away from his wedding and about to begin filming his next movie, appeared calm when speaking with CBC News at Toronto’s Revue Cinema. The discussion centered around “Tony,” a biopic exploring the early life of acclaimed chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain. Despite Bourdain’s posthumous status as a revered figure, Johnson expressed comfort in sharing his story.

Johnson initially had no interest in creating a film about Bourdain, but a meeting with actor Dominic Sessa, who portrays Bourdain in the movie, changed his perspective. The script for “Tony” draws from Bourdain’s youth, particularly his experiences detailed in the book “Kitchen Confidential,” focusing on a pivotal summer in Provincetown, Mass., where Bourdain started his culinary journey.

By concentrating on Bourdain’s formative years, Johnson sidestepped the pressure of depicting the more mature Bourdain that many fans remember. The narrative delves into Bourdain’s coming-of-age challenges, including his relationships with family and peers as he entered adulthood. Johnson emphasized that this approach made Bourdain’s story relatable and impactful for audiences.

“Tony” is set to premiere in Canadian theaters on August 14, offering viewers a unique perspective on the early life of the iconic chef.
