During the race, Ingebrigtsen made a late surge, moving from third place and overtaking Florian Bremm of Germany in the final 50 meters to secure victory in a time of 13 minutes 15:29 seconds. Reflecting on his win, Ingebrigtsen expressed his gratitude, stating, “Coming from the lowest of lows to be European champion again means the world to me.”
His competitors praised his remarkable performance, with Etienne Daguinos hailing him as “a legend of our sport,” and Bremm acknowledging Ingebrigtsen’s superior speed even after his injury setback. Despite his triumph in the 5,000 meters, Ingebrigtsen opted not to compete in the 1,500 meters at the Birmingham event, having previously claimed victory in both disciplines at the last three European championships.
Ingebrigtsen’s victory marks his seventh individual European gold, further solidifying his status as the most successful male athlete in the history of the continental championship. His return to form follows a less successful outing at the world championships in Tokyo last year, where his Achilles issues may have impacted his performance.
In a separate event, British sprinter Amy Hunt clinched the women’s 100 meters title in a closely contested race, with defending champion Dina Asher-Smith finishing fifth. Dutch shot putter Jessica Schilder continued her dominance in the competition, securing her third consecutive gold medal with a throw of 20.73 meters, despite dealing with an injured finger.
Schilder, the reigning world champion, expressed her satisfaction with the win, emphasizing her confidence and determination to excel despite the physical challenges. Leonardo Fabbri successfully defended his men’s shot put title, with teammate Zane Weir securing silver in the event.
