Simone Abrahamsohn, a resident of Toronto, shared her experience of becoming her older brother’s primary caregiver after the loss of their mother this summer. Despite the challenges of cohabiting with a neurodivergent sibling, Abrahamsohn finds joy in her brother Stuart’s company, appreciating his love for pistachio milkshakes and interest in violinist podcasts. Stuart, who is autistic and a left-brain stem stroke survivor, requires assistance with daily activities due to physical and emotional challenges.
Abrahamsohn reflects on past experiences where she felt embarrassed by her brother’s behaviors, such as stimming and introversion, which led to misunderstandings among others. She acknowledges similarities with her brother, as she has learned to manage her own neurodivergent traits, like ADHD, through masking and coping mechanisms. Balancing her own needs with Stuart’s, Abrahamsohn strives to create a harmonious living environment by being mindful of triggers and adjusting her behavior accordingly.
Having witnessed her brother’s struggles with social acceptance and academic challenges, Abrahamsohn now advocates for Stuart and seeks to empower him in decision-making and daily activities. Despite sacrificing personal interests like acting classes to prioritize caregiving, Abrahamsohn values the bond with her brother and aims to improve their living situation through support from caregivers and a positive attitude. Embracing this second chance to be a better sibling, Abrahamsohn is committed to nurturing a supportive and understanding relationship with Stuart.
