Detroit native Patty Czajka reminisced about her childhood fascination with the Canadian TV series “Road to Avonlea,” set in Prince Edward Island. Every Sunday, she bonded with her grandmother over the show, particularly admiring actress Mag Ruffman’s portrayal of Aunt Olivia. When Czajka learned of a fan convention in P.E.I. featuring Ruffman, she eagerly purchased a ticket to attend.
Describing Ruffman as her childhood version of a Disney princess, Czajka expressed her excitement at being in P.E.I. for the event. Fans from around the globe gathered for the sold-out convention celebrating the acclaimed Canadian series, which aired in over 100 countries from 1990 to 1996.
“Road to Avonlea” followed the story of Sarah Stanley, played by Sarah Polley, as she navigated life with her late mother’s relatives at the turn of the 20th century. Loosely based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, the show garnered a dedicated following that continues to endure.
The convention, spanning three days, featured oyster and wine tastings, panel discussions with the cast and crew, and guided tours to filming locations and Montgomery’s historical sites. Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, emphasized the show’s enduring appeal, citing its themes of kindness and camaraderie.
Ruffman, overwhelmed by the fans’ enthusiasm, shared her ongoing connection to the show and its characters. Czajka, now introducing the series to her own children, highlighted its timeless quality and rarity in family-friendly entertainment today.
The convention concluded with a sense of nostalgia and anticipation for the show’s lasting impact on audiences, with hopes of future gatherings to celebrate its enduring legacy.
