A £2 million boost has been allocated to enhance war memorials, with a commitment from ministers to safeguard them as revered locations.
This funding will expand on the ongoing efforts of The National Heritage Memorial Fund to safeguard some of the UK’s most esteemed heritage sites and facilitate increased community access to aid in the preservation of their local war memorials.
The announcement coincides with communities throughout the UK coming together to observe Remembrance Sunday and pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in service.
In support of this initiative, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy emphasized the significance of war memorials as more than historical edifices, highlighting them as sacred spaces where communities unite to honor the fallen.
Nandy further stated, “As we commemorate Remembrance Sunday and reflect on the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, it is our responsibility to ensure the preservation of these memorials with the utmost dignity and reverence.”
Collaborating with the War Memorials Trust, Historic England, and other partners, the funding will aid communities nationwide in safeguarding and restoring their local war memorials through grants, expert counsel, and support.
Director of War Memorials Trust, Ms Frances Moreton, underscored the importance of preserving the UK’s 100,000 war memorials as symbols that remind us of the profound impact of conflict and the need to uphold the memory of those who served.
The upcoming National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in London will be led by the King, accompanied by members of the royal family and senior politicians who will lay wreaths to pay respects to the fallen.
Approximately 10,000 armed forces veterans are expected to participate in the Royal British Legion’s march-past, with around 20 Second World War veterans attending the event, marking 80 years since the conclusion of the conflict.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer remarked, “This Remembrance Sunday, as a nation, we pause to honor all those who have served our country and reflect on the remarkable bravery of our armed forces in past wars and conflicts, whose sacrifices have safeguarded the freedoms we cherish today.”
Starmer added, “Eighty years since the end of the Second World War, we remember a generation that stood against tyranny and shaped our future. Their legacy is peace, and it is our duty to uphold it.”
