An acclaimed bed and breakfast establishment with an attached café has shut down, delivering a significant blow to the local community. The owner attributed the closure to the challenging location, which resulted in a lack of foot traffic.
The Dove Inn, a gluten-free café and B&B located in Alburgh, Norfolk, ceased its operations on Friday after operating for two and a half years. Owner Sonya Resemblance, who referred to the patrons as “beautiful people,” made the announcement.
This closure is part of a broader trend affecting the pub and hospitality industry in Britain, with numerous establishments closing annually due to escalating costs and evolving consumer behaviors.
For instance, the popular White Horse pub on London End in Beaconsfield recently closed permanently, reflecting the industry’s struggles. Pub owners had previously warned about the sector’s challenges, citing substantial cost increases as a significant factor in the closure of 300 pubs in the first quarter of 2025.
Prior to shutting down, The Dove Inn had received recognition as one of the top 50 cafes in the UK at the 2025 Small Business Awards. Sonya Resemblance took over the inn in July 2023, offering a variety of meals and hosting events to support mental well-being.
The establishment had also achieved success by winning two awards at Luxlife Magazine’s Food and Drink Awards in Norfolk, being recognized as the Emerging Hospitality Business of the Year and the B&B and Pub of the Year.
A standout feature of The Dove Inn was its entirely gluten-free menu, a point of pride for Sonya, who aimed to cater to individuals with dietary restrictions.
In an announcement about the closure, Sonya expressed gratitude for the support received from customers and highlighted the business’s role in creating jobs, offering training opportunities, and providing essential social spaces for mental health.
Despite efforts from loyal customers to keep the business afloat, Sonya confirmed the closure on January 16, with an outpouring of supportive messages.
One customer conveyed disappointment at the news but expressed hope for a potential return of the beloved establishment in the future.
