An electrician expressed surprise after being denied entry to a beer garden for wearing work attire. Graham, the owner of an alarm company, had just finished work on a Friday afternoon and decided to stop for a quick drink with colleagues.
Despite being “clean” and not “covered head to toe in paint,” Graham and his friends were turned away from the pub as they were still in their work clothes. The pub confirmed that it enforces a “smart casual dress code” where uniforms and workwear are not considered appropriate attire.
The incident occurred around 2pm on Wednesday when Graham attempted to enter The Dirty Onion beer garden in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter. The matter was discussed on BBC’s The Nolan Show, with Graham questioning whether individuals dressed in suits, which are often considered ‘workwear,’ would also face entry refusal.
Graham recounted the situation, mentioning that the doorman informed them of the no workwear policy, leaving them surprised by the decision. He raised questions about the discrimination against tradespeople and the perception of their attire not being suitable for a Friday afternoon outing.
Addressing the issue, Graham suggested that the refusal might reflect a class bias. While understanding the need for dress codes, he emphasized that they were presentable and clean, unlike individuals in other professions who might be allowed entry.
Several individuals criticized the bar’s decision on social media, highlighting the unfair treatment of working individuals based on their attire. They called for appreciation rather than shaming of those in workwear.
The Dirty Onion defended its stance, stating that they adhere to a smart casual dress code established since the bar’s inception. The bar’s spokesperson mentioned that their door staff exercise discretion but generally do not permit uniforms or workwear as part of the smart casual attire.
The bar emphasized its commitment to a welcoming environment and explained that their door staff politely inform customers who do not meet the dress code requirements. While regretting the inconvenience caused to the customer in this instance, they reiterated their adherence to the established dress code policy.
