Oscar Piastri faces obstacles in his pursuit of the Formula 1 championship this weekend, as he is one of nine drivers who will miss the first practice session at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix due to a regulation introduced at the beginning of 2025.
The upcoming race at the Yas Marina Circuit will determine the champion, with Piastri, Lando Norris, and Max Verstappen competing for the top spot. A podium finish for Norris could secure him the title, but any errors could give his rivals an opening.
Given the high stakes in Abu Dhabi, it is crucial for drivers to maximize their practice time. Nearly half of the grid will be absent from the initial hour of running due to a rule mandating teams to provide opportunities for rookie drivers.
Throughout the season, each team must include a rookie driver in two free practice sessions per car, totaling four sessions per team. Several teams still need to meet their rookie session requirements, leading to the inclusion of new faces in FP1 this weekend.
Piastri is among those being substituted, with Pato O’Ward taking over his McLaren. Lewis Hamilton will also not participate in the session, as Ferrari announced that Arthur Leclerc will replace him.
Arvid Lindblad, who is set to drive for Racing Bulls next season, will replace Yuki Tsunoda at Red Bull, while Ayumu Iwasa will take Liam Lawson’s place at sister team RB. Additionally, Ryo Hirakawa will step in for Esteban Ocon at Haas.
Alex Albon will sit out the session, with Williams academy member Luke Browning filling in. Aston Martin will give two rookies a chance in FP1, with Cian Shields and Jak Crawford taking over for Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, respectively.
Alpine will field Paul Aron for his fifth FP1 outing of the season, replacing Pierre Gasly. Sky has enhanced its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports bundle to include various streaming platforms and extensive coverage of Formula 1.
Mercedes and Sauber have already met their rookie practice session requirements, allowing George Russell, Kimi Antonelli, Nico Hulkenberg, and Gabriel Bortoleto to proceed as usual.
Abu Dhabi is a popular location for rookie sessions, especially as it is the final weekend of the season. FP1 occurs under daytime conditions, different from those in qualifying and the race. Rookie sessions play a vital role in the development of young drivers, often leading to permanent seats in the future.
