NATO fighter jets were dispatched to intercept a Russian surveillance aircraft amidst ongoing provocations by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Recent incidents involving airspace breaches and mysterious drone activities at European airports have raised concerns about Russia’s unconventional warfare tactics. NATO confirmed that two F35 stealth fighter jets were scrambled from its Quick Reaction Alert to shadow an IL-20 COOT-A aircraft detected in international airspace near Finnmark, Norway.
The IL-20 COOT-A, a specialized electronic reconnaissance plane equipped with sensors and antennas for signal collection and surveillance, has been repeatedly involved in airspace violations across Western countries. NATO’s air defense operation, Eastern Sentry, was established in response to incursions like these, with specific focus on regions such as the Baltic Sea and the Polish-Ukrainian border.
US Lt Gen Alex Grynkewich, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander, commended the swift response to recent airspace breaches but emphasized the need for flexible deployment of aircraft across defense missions. NATO officials have urged member countries to ease restrictions on defense equipment deployment and rules of engagement to enhance collective defense capabilities.
The spike in incidents began with a swarm of Russian drones breaching Polish airspace on September 10, prompting NATO intervention to intercept and neutralize the drones. Subsequent encounters saw NATO jets escorting Russian warplanes out of Estonian airspace and continued flyovers near critical installations across the continent. In response, European defense ministers have agreed to establish a “drone wall” along borders to bolster surveillance and interception capabilities against unauthorized drone activities.
While Russia has been linked to some of the airspace violations, the country denies any deliberate involvement or culpability. European defense measures are being reinforced to counter such provocations and safeguard regional security.
