Despite the prevalence of fast 4G and 5G connections on new smartphones, the older 2G network is still in use throughout the UK. This technology, which dates back to 1993, continues to serve certain phones, alarms, and health devices.
However, it has been announced that 2G will soon be phased out, following the footsteps of 3G, with Virgin Media O2 confirming the shutdown of this network by 2029. This decision is part of the company’s efforts to modernize its infrastructure and enhance future connectivity.
While the closure of 2G marks the end of an era, it brings positive outcomes. Virgin Media O2 states that retiring 2G will enable them to focus on expanding and enhancing their 4G and 5G networks. The company anticipates that this upgrade will result in faster speeds, more reliable connections, and reduced energy consumption, aligning with consumer expectations.
“We’re investing £700 million this year to revamp our mobile network and ensure it meets the increasing demands of consumers,” said Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2.
“Looking ahead, we will deactivate the old 2G network to prioritize providing all customers with the dependable and efficient 4G and 5G mobile services they anticipate.
“Following the recent shutdown of our 3G network and our commitment to the government 2G switch-off charter, we have a clear roadmap for this transition that minimizes disruptions to customers. While most users won’t need to take any action, some businesses may need to start preparing for this change now.
“We will directly engage with customers and ensure that everyone is supported throughout this necessary upgrade.”
The scheduled shutdown in 2029 provides customers and businesses with ample time to prepare and upgrade any devices reliant on 2G.
First introduced in the UK in 1993, 2G has been the cornerstone of mobile communication for many years. It brought about reliable voice calls and text messaging, along with extensive coverage that facilitated connectivity in regions where newer networks were challenging to implement.
Despite the superior data speeds offered by modern networks like 4G and 5G, 2G remains valuable for specific devices due to its reliability, energy efficiency, and wide coverage capabilities.
However, as the demand for faster and more advanced mobile services rises, Virgin Media O2 emphasizes that moving away from 2G will enable them to concentrate resources on the next wave of connectivity.
