UK Health Agency Warns of Rising Covid Variants

Must Read

The most recent data released by the UK Health Security Agency reveals that Covid prevalence is currently at a moderate level but is on the rise across the nation. The predominant variants in the UK are the XFG and NB lineages, with Stratus (XFG) and Nimbus (NB.1.8.1) being the most prevalent.

Symptoms of the Stratus variant include a persistent dry cough, hoarseness, fatigue, headaches, congestion, sore throat, and digestive issues. On the other hand, symptoms of the Nimbus variant encompass a “razor blade” sore throat, digestive problems, fatigue, a mild cough, muscle aches, and fever.

With Covid now classified as an endemic respiratory virus, the emphasis is on vaccinating high-risk groups and self-isolating if feeling unwell to prevent virus transmission. Individuals can verify their Covid status by conducting a rapid lateral flow test.

While most people need to purchase Covid rapid lateral flow tests, certain individuals are eligible to receive them for free. Those at the highest risk of severe illness from Covid due to medical conditions can obtain free tests. Eligibility can be confirmed by consulting with a general practitioner or medical specialist.

If eligible for Covid treatments, individuals can access free Covid rapid lateral flow tests from pharmacies. Test results are displayed within minutes, with a positive result indicating a likely Covid infection, prompting the need for self-isolation and medical consultation. In case of a negative result, individuals should still follow preventive measures to reduce Covid transmission risks.

If symptoms persist, individuals eligible for Covid treatments should conduct three rapid lateral flow tests over three days. In instances where the test result is inconclusive, a repeat test is recommended.
