“Android Phones Face Varying Support Periods”

Must Read

Android phones continue to hold the top spot as the most popular devices globally, offering affordability and extensive customization options. The diverse range of handsets available from various manufacturers contributes to their widespread appeal. However, the issue arises in the varying support periods for different devices.

For instance, newer models like the Galaxy S26 and Google Pixel phones receive up to seven years of both Android and security updates. In contrast, older Galaxy A-series devices may only receive around four years of support, while certain phones from brands like Xiaomi and Motorola could see updates for just three years.

Although the device will not immediately become inoperable, the lack of essential security patches and software updates can impact its functionality sooner than expected. Android updates typically fall into two categories: major Android version updates that introduce new features annually, and security updates released throughout the year to address vulnerabilities and protect devices from threats.

While many manufacturers, such as Samsung and Google, have extended their support timelines in recent years, older devices may not receive the same level of support. To determine the remaining lifespan of an Android phone, users can simply check the device model in the Settings menu and visit endoflife.date for a list of supported devices and their update end dates, indicated by amber and red warnings.

Even after reaching the end of its support period, the phone can still handle basic functions like calls and messages. However, it will miss out on new features and security enhancements, potentially exposing it to cyber risks. Continuing to use an unsupported device, especially for sensitive activities like online banking or storing passwords, can pose significant security threats due to unpatched vulnerabilities that may be exploited by malware.

It is advisable to monitor the update timeline of your phone to prepare for the end of support and consider upgrading to a newer device when necessary.
