An urgent warning has been issued to users of Android and iPhone devices regarding the dangers associated with using unauthorized charging accessories. With many new devices being sold without chargers, consumers are often forced to seek out cheaper alternatives, such as third-party chargers available online for significantly less than those from reputable manufacturers like Apple and Samsung.
Consumer watchdog Which? conducted an investigation by purchasing various chargers from online platforms like Amazon, eBay, and others. Shockingly, the tests revealed that nine of the chargers posed risks of electric shock due to substandard manufacturing, while eight were identified as potential fire hazards.
In one alarming instance, Which? uncovered a counterfeit charger designed to resemble an Apple product, complete with deceptive packaging. The investigation also revealed chargers lacking essential UK safety markings and internal circuitry issues that could lead to overheating, fire, or explosions.
This is not the first time Which? has raised concerns about unsafe electrical products being sold through online marketplaces. Sue Davies from Which? emphasized the severe consequences that poorly designed electrical items can have and called for stricter product safety laws and enforcement measures for online platforms.
In response to the findings, Amazon reiterated its commitment to customer safety and mentioned its collaboration with Electrical Safety First to promote safe charging practices. Amazon assured that all products on its platform adhere to regulations and that the identified risky chargers have been removed. B&Q also emphasized its dedication to product safety and ensuring recalled items are not available on its Marketplace.
Consumers are advised to purchase chargers only from authorized retailers or trusted brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung to avoid potential safety hazards associated with cheaper alternatives. While official products may come at a higher cost, experts warn that the risks of using unauthorized chargers outweigh the savings.
